My MO is to ctrl-click on what looks like an empty freq. If I don't see anything after 2 or 3 cycles I feel it's OK to xmt on that freq. I also use split exclusively.

Do you have any theories on why a station gets covered by another station on exactly the same frequuency +/- 1-2 Hz? I don't know, maybe the other station chose that frequency because it looked clear to transmit (the weak station was weak enough that they didn't see it). On a crowded FT8 segment, like 14.074 in the evening here, signals are packed in like sardines and you have to do your best to find a relatively open slot. Or maybe he was just a lid!
