Argh. I was fearing that...

IIRC all it took stopping the creation process is to press the Stop
button in ones browser, no? Have there been actual complaints from
users who were accidentally accessing this index and couldn't stop it?

Not quite, I fear. I am sometimes searching things which have been
maybe 30 runs away, and of course, I only remember part of the URI.

Okay, I haven't yet checked out the htDig interface which might be
able to do this too, but I guess it takes even longer to create an
index with a * wildcard.

I have lots of prevout pages which are empty because I do not leave
my modem connection open all the time (apart from the fact that my
connection dies on me too) -- and my connect scripts are calling
"wwwoffle -on" and "wwwoffle -off".

I would have to increase them to like 50 previous pages and search
through them one by one... :-( Okay, I could write a script for
that and merge them, but this is kludgy.

Really, couldn't this be a compile time option at least, or an
accessible function on a "hidden" page? Maybe with a huge
disclaimer, I don't mind... If I ask nicely? :-)

Cheers,
  Colin
