Hi Juraj, thank you for the excellent pointer. Plasticfs sounds really GREAT. I have found another project on freshmeat.net which explicitly claims to be able to do this, freshmeat.net/projects/translucency/ About: translucency is a loadable kernel module for Linux that virtually merges two directories, making it possible to overwrite files on read-only media The problem I see with both is portability. I guess neither of them will work on systems other than Linux. Apparently they are both kernel patches. This does not yet solve the problem for me since I still do most of my work on Windows.
