All,
If someone has enough time to hack at this & is sympathetic, something I  miss from other window managers is
maximize-vertically  (not just the option-+ thing - most unix apps don't parse this). Nearly always what I need
is preserve-width + maximize-height. You can do this in windowmaker or the like, but Xquartz coexists with the rest of the OSX
world rather better, it seems.
Just by 2c while it's topical :-)

Cheers
        James.

Yeah, patches are certainly welcome from anyone who wants to tackle issues like this.

I looked into this.  Not sure it is possible for me (or us) to fix this.  Might require access to Apple-only API parts.

I agree that the window growbox needs to be removed for two reasons.  One is so that it matches the look and feel of Lion (and newer OS versions).  The second reason is more important, the growbox causes X11 graphical glitches.  I will post an email to this list that demonstrates this bad behavior.

Really?  That's news to me.

Yeah, patches are certainly welcome from anyone who wants to tackle issues like this.

#ifdef's are compile-time mechanisms.  The same binary runs on multiple OS versions, so it would need to be a runtime check if you wanted to support multiple styles.  Personally, I'd prefer to see the edge-resize even on Snow Leopard because the grab handle can block content.

Yep.
