Hi Colin, I had a brand new iMac with M1 chip last year, set up by the IT team at my university, and I had the same problem when I tried and installed xQuartz 2.8.2 on it.
That computer now had a different issue and was wiped and reinstalled by our IT team, and I haven’t yet tried to install xQuartz, but I intend to do it soon. I have no idea of the answer, but I’d be very interested to know as well! I do NOT have any .xinitrc file in my user directory however. I have made no changes to any X11 setups. I have checked the /usr/X11/lib/X11//xinit/xinitrc and /usr/X11/lib/X11//xinit/xinitrc.d and they seem to match completely an install I have on a Big Sur MacOS machine where I can launch and quit X11 with no issues. What might be relaunching X11? Are there any ideas of where to look to see what process is keeping it alive?
