For anyone you may see this thread later, I removed .Xauthority, .Xdefaults, 
and .Xresources and it resolved the problem. Upon further experimentation, I 
had a line in .Xresources that was "Xterm*locale: true”. Commenting out that 
line restored normal function. I’ve had that line in there for a long time so I 
don’t recall why I put it in there in the first place. I suppose I’ll find out 
eventually….
