I don't see recursive make as a problem, as I don't see what reasons Peter Miller describes would apply to the x2go code base. Implementing non-recursive make would require to always invoke make from the top-level directory, which I found quite annoying at times. but that's something that the folks who actually work on the code need to decide on.
