NOT speaking on behalf of IBM, since I have no idea what the Java group's current status or plans might be: Remember that VAJAVA isn't IBM's only Java product, for Linux or elsewhere.
IBM definitely still has Linux JVMs; if I'm reading the websites correctly I think they're up to 1.3 on all the platforms IBM supports.
I believe the Websphere Studio Application Developer tool is actually able to use whatever post-1.1 JVM is available; unlike VAJAVA, it doesn't need a modified JVM, and thus while it can't offer some of the more ad-tech features it's a lot easier to keep in synch with reality. There's a Linux preview of that package currently available. (WSAD's built on the open-source Eclipe platform, by the way, which may make it of additional interest to the Apache community.)
I liked VAJAVA too. And it's always a pain to switch tools. But sometimes it's the right way to go forward.
