My build says V1.9.4
Compiled: ma nov 17th 19:25:40 CET 2008 (!)

It just worked, from the moment of install, on and old AMD2600+ plus box. Copied the maps from the old box and.... it just worked. Now running the local igate while VK3ecv has a well earned holiday

With a bunch of people running Ubuntu, why not just 'sudo apt-get
install xastir' ?

Is the version shipped with 9.10's repositories lacking some major features?

Can't answer that as I don't run Ubuntu nor know what version of
Xastir binary they have.

On a side note for the list, does anyone have a good dummy's guide to
reading and writing to the sm0 or other ax.25 devices in linux? I do
know it's dgram mode, but have only done a cursory look so far.
Preferrably I'd like to access it via Perl or Python as I'm not much
of a C guy at this point, though it seems I may need to become one for
this project.

I'd like to give a go at making a standalone APRS msg only client for
linux, the protocol is pretty simple as I've already poked at it and
conversed in raw UI mode doing the acks etc manually with a few
people.

I'd suggest scanning the linux-hams mailing list on "vger", perhaps
via a Google search, to see what apps you might find there that talk
to the AX.25 kernel networking port or to a serial KISS TNC. You
might get lucky and find non-C code to do what you want that you can
borrow from another open-source project.
