I've got an idea... What about creating a PPA for Xastir on Launchpad.net? https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas https://help.launchpad.net/Packaging/PPA This would allow the Xastir team to publish updated packages more often than the Ubuntu package maintainers. Users would just need to add the line for this custom repository to their sources.list (can be done completely from the GUI, System -> Administration -> Software Sources). Then apt-get install xastir would install the latest xastir from this custom repo, along with dependencies. Updates could be done with apt-get update; apt-get upgrade.
