Check to see if there's something amiss in the .cvsrc file in your
home directory. It should read something like this:

cvs -q -z3
update -d -P
diff -u

If you have no .cvsrc file I don't know where this error message can be
coming from, but you can try adding "-z3" to the command line right
after "cvs".

Tom!

Thanks for the reply. The problem was due to the controlcharachters for cr/lf.

After it worked fine.

But I had problems with the get-maptools.sh part of Your instruction

I have sent a query to this list about it.

I couldn't see how to do this:"

"This means you have to remove the line referencing "proj-4.4.9" (because we installed it via apt-get already)"

[edit <http://www.xastir.org/wiki/index.php?title=HowTo:Ubuntu_6.10&action=edit&section=10>]
How much shall be removed ?.

I couldn't find this:

" #WARNING WARNING WARNING
# On any system that uses GCC 4.x as its compiler, it is probably necessary
# to uncomment the stuff between here and the next "else". If you see
# an error message of the form"

--snip----

I got Xastir installed with the xastir that follows Kubuntu 7.04b.

Will I benefit anything installing per Your instruction ?. Better maps or so ?.

Well I live in Denmark, and US maps is not useable here.
