OK, so this means libgeotiff got installed properly, and the symlinks are all
in place.  So either configure failed to find it, or there are other problems.

Now the next question.  Does configure find libgeotiff?  If so, then the
answer is probably that you need to make sure /usr/local/lib is in 
/etc/ld.so.conf.  If so, then you probably need an "sudo ldconfig".  On the
other hand, since I think I recall that you said that configure didn't find
libgeotiff, and because get-maptools.sh is supposed to take care of ld.so.conf
and ldconfig, this is probably not the problem.

Please attach the config.log file --- it will show what happened when
configure tried to find geotiff.
