Make sure you have libcurl installed and working on that system. You should be able to test it with the "curl" command against some file on the internet. I would have expected to see an error message about not being able to link Xastir against that library if it were missing though. Perhaps it's installed but non-functional for some reason? Check in your ~/.xastir/tmp/ directory for something like map.jpg or map.gif. Try using "display" on the file to see if the map image itself got downloaded ok. If the file isn't there, then your libcurl isn't fetching it.
