In my fairly limited experience with VMware, it doesn't like it when the serial ports/USB devices come and go, especially if they are in use. If you hard code com port support in the VMware config file (e.g., you let windows take care of the USB/rs232 driver and let VMware see a com port) things do not work well if that usb/rs232 device goes away, to the point it may take a reboot of the VM and a restart of VMware player to get it sane again.
