I also found this on the ubuntu forums. Adding the username that needs to access the serial port to the group, "dialout".
sudo adduser username dialout This Fluxbuntu thing got my curiosity going, so I created a virtual machine with it. A check of the properties of ttyS0 shows indeed that the owner, group is root, dialout. By the way, Fluxbuntu is based on Ubuntu 7.10 - evidently no 8.04 version yet.
