I'm wondering if you are seeing the latest incarnation of the problems
in Gnome when "visual effects" or "desktop effects are enabled.

Here's a snippet from one of Tom's messages on this issue.

"Try turning off "visual effects" --- there's an issue with those and Motif.
"Visual Effects" (Compiz) are the eye-candy like animated window zooming,
fading screens and 3D stuff that went from being default-off options called
"Desktop Effects" in 7.10 to default-on called "Visual Effects" in 8.04."

Since I am using Xubuntu, I would not have this problem. I don't know
if they are still called visual effects in 8.10.
