Hi James,
yes, makedns -e can update the existing zones on the external dns servers
if:
1. the external dns server trusted the xcat_key.
2. the external dns server has been listed in the /etc/resolv.conf on mn.
The ddns can only update dns records to the existing zones, while not be
able to create the new zones on the external dns server, I'm thinking this
makes sense, since zone changes need to restart(or reload) named, this
might not be called as "dynamic" :)

Re: [xcat-user] New makedns -e option in xCAT 2.7
I haven't looked, but makedns has been able to update existing zones on
other dns servers if and only if that server trusted the xcatd key.
Kerberized update isn't yet supported, but if someone requests that should
be a feasible thing to implement.
It was unable to create new zones (afaik, the standard remote dns update
mechanism has no such provision, but I could be wrong...)

[xcat-user] New makedns -e option in xCAT 2.7
Hi xCAT List,
For some time we have been under the impression that we needed to define a
separate DNS sub-domain for each xCAT management node (i.e. each xCAT
cluster) that we have in our environment.
I notice in the fine print of the release notes for xCAT 2.7 that xCAT can
now update an external DNS server using the makedns -e option. Does this
mean that multiple xCAT management nodes (managing different clusters) can
now share a single DNS sub-domain? Or is it still recommended that each
cluster be part of a separate DNS sub-domain?
If we use makedns -e, do the DNS zone files for forward and reverse name
resolution need to be already defined on the external DNS server i.e. does
the makedns -e command only update existing DNS zones or can it create new
zones?
