OK, thanks for all the help. I eventually tracked it down to having a different compiler setting that matched a library's compiler setting, so that symbols were hidden by default. Obviously (in hindsight), that meant that the plugin factory method wasn't visible...

Funnily enough, creating a totally new qlgenerator comes up with the same errors from qlmanage, so they are apparently a red herring!
