Ramy,

I am still not convinced this is an XCSoar issue. The original Swiss Flarm
has a „Receive“ LED, that AFAIK is not available on the Powerflarm. The LED
is on whenever data from another Flarm is received. In some situations (for
example, a glider with carbon fuselage circling above you and nobody else in
range) it is quite common, that the receive LED goes on and off frequently
during a circle, when reception is lost because of antenna positions in the
gliders are not playing well together. When the LED goes off, the target is
removed from XCSoar Flarm Radar almost instantly.

In the same situation with a Powerflarm you probably would not even know
that reception is lost, and blame XCSoar for not showing a target that´s
obviously right there. Butterfly might apply some filtering, and still show
the target for some time, although its position may be outdated already.

While we trying to figure out the issue with the flarm radar interruptions,
I think it will be good to know if anyone else is using Powerflram (not
standard flarm) successfully with XCSoar, and if so, is it a brick or
portable and how is it connected. In particular would like to know about
Dell Streak/Soartronic/powerflarm combo.

Thanks,

Ramy

I finally captured an NMEA file whille the flarm radar was going on and off
the whole time. See ticket http://bugs.xcsoar.org/ticket/2322

The Flarm radar seem to work fine on the ground with nearby static targets,
but still goes on and off intermittently in the air. I secured the
soartronic bluetooth and verified that the Flarm messages coming every
second, so this is probably not an issue with the bluetooth. Unfortunately
no NMEA log file, as by the time I figured how to turn on the raw logger in
flight (should have tried it on the ground first) I had no more flarm
targets. Once I get a log file I'll open a bug. Maybe this is an issue
specific to Powerflarm.

Otherwise the flarm radar is great as it provides more info than my
Butterfly display. All we need is audio alert and it will be perfect. I'll
open a ticket for that as well.

Thanks,

Ramy

I think you should look at the FLARM messages,

Place you PDA/phone device where you normally use it during flight, start
XCSoar and go to Config>Devices (FLARM selected)>Monitorig

You should now see a new FLARM NMEA sentence coming about once per second.

If it is interrupted, look at the antenna position. Class 2 Bluetooth is
designed for max 30 meters range, it's very low power system. If the antenna
is between metal housings, for example, please move it so, that there are no
metal or carbon fiber objects between receiving and transmitting antennas.
Also place BT module away from radio and radio antenna cabling, and GPS
antenna.

The delay I noticed was more like 10 seconds or more. Also the flarm radar
would go off and on while the butterfly display was still showing targets.
This is all based on a single flight so not sure what was going on. Perhaps
I missed something in the configuration? My 302 is configured as device A,
Powerflarm via SoarTronic as deviced B (using Flarm driver). I also have the
internal GPS as device C.

Flarm send a new NMEA sentence about once per second. The difference if it
is transmitted on 19200 bauds or faster is just millisecs. Therefore we did
not see it necessary to setup the Soartronic BT module for higher com speed
than the std. 19200b.

I also noticed a delay, but I wouldn't say it's significant maybe 1/2 sec.
max I guess. Nonetheless, I keep Flarm radar turned off but show traffic in
the map display, since I have a Butterfly and a Flarm V3 display connected
to the Swiss built Flarm. Both display light up simultanously. Also I run
the Dell Streak connected via BT (selfbuilt BT222) with 38.000baud.
Assuming you run it with the standard 19.200baud, try speeding up the
connection and see if you still see the delay.

Cheers

Sascha

When I have been testing the communication, it looks like the LED based
display in not very fast. It seems to take some time to notice, that GPS
connection is fixed. This based on comparing the NMEA sentences received in
XCSoar (Devices/Monitoring) and the LED external display.

I've been using the Flarm Radar for over 3 years now and I haven't
noticed any delays like that. It might be related to the PowerFLARM
since we mostly use the original swiss Flarms here in Germany/Europe.
