Hi Aslak,

What is the relationship between Middlegen and
XDoclet2 going to be like going forward? Will there be
tighter coupling between the two? Shared metadata
model? I haven't seen any details (beside vague hints
in the roadmap and you're answer re: jdk1.5 about this
anywhere.

XDoclet2 is a generic code generation engine where metadata can be plugged in on top (MetadataProvider) and filegenerator plugins can be plugged in at the bottom (Plugin).

There is no shared metadata model. By metadata, we mean any kind of Java Object that can be used by Velocity or Jelly scripts.

This means that one particular Plugin will only work with one particular MetadataProvider.

XJavaDoc is one such MetadataProvider, And Middlegen3 will be another. And you can roll your own.

For instance, I've been bitten by differences in the
way XDoclet and Middlegen do variable naming (I saw
that the original SF.net cvs checkin for
middlegen.Util.java's decapitalize() method used
java.beans.Introspector.decapitalize() -- what XDoclet
uses -- but that that was abadoned. My local middlegen
tree has a mod by me to go back to using
Introspector's version.

A patch to Middlegen would be most welcome. Follow the patching instructions here: http://opensource.atlassian.com/projects/xdoclet/

Sorry, I suppose this is slightly off-topic WRT the
Jakarta proposal.

Slightly, yes ;-)

Cheers,
Aslak

Hi folks,

I'll start preparing a proposal for Jakarta
membership for XDoclet2 next week. I'll post drafts here before I submit the
final proposal.
