I have to say, as an end user (and with English as my second language), I was astounded to see that so much effort had been wasted in what seems to be such a silly goal. Internationalising build messages.

I can understand the end goal, but really, think of the target audience for xdoclet. It's developers. It's people who will read the xdoclet documentation. it's people who will be able to write java code, and read javadocs, and look through ejb tutorials, etc etc.

Do you honestly think that such people can get by without rudimentary knowledge of English? Speaking English well is one thing, but being able to grok what are essentially fairly simple build messages really is another. I'd be surprised if there were a SINGLE user who thought 'gosh, if it weren't for these messages in my native tongue, I'd never be able to use xdoclet' (in whatever native tongue they speak, that is). For one thing, they're required to write an ant buildfile, again, something I doubt most could do without English.

IMHO (as an end user, and occasional contributor to templates and casual code browser) the xdoclet code seems to be horribly complicated and inelegant. Of course, I could be completely wrong (I hope I am, in fact), but it seems that as things progress, the code gets even more obscure, and the barrier to entry becomes harder and harder.

The complicated build message translation subsystem is a perfect example of this!

As if it didn't take long enough to read all my mail, newsgroups & the SF
forums, do I have to read everybody's blogs as well now? ;-)
Please, if it's relevant to XDoclet, discuss it on the mailing lists FFS -
that's what they're here for...

Do we really need localised messages?
Yes.

I find it ironic that of all the developers I seem to be one of the
biggest supporters of localisation. Isn't it meant to be us English that
are the worst nation for learning foreign languages?
