Hi Joanne,
These sound like good changes to me! When you're ready to contribute them,
just open a Bugzilla report and attach the patch to it; one of the
committers can then review it at leisure and integrate it into the
codebase.

Ok, that's fair. I've started on that path. Changes I'm in the
process of making (mostly but not entirely done) include
src/xercesc/runConfigure
- update output from runConfigure -h invocations to include information
about defaults
- change behavior (slightly) so that help output will still appear
even if XERCESCROOT is not defined
sample/runConfigure
- update output from runConfigure -h invocations to include information
about defaults
doc/build-winunix.xml
- update displays of output from runConfigure -h calls to match
modified versions
- change some misleading text about using configure directly with
gnu compilers
- add some text explaining some runConfigure options in more detail
