Howdy,

No necessarily! If MacTeX installed gs under Lion gs would properly be a link 
to the X11 version. If one then installed Mountain Lion X11 would be removed 
and you have the problem. That's why FixMacTeX2012.pkg includes a fix if you 
don't have X11/xQuartz and resets the gs link.
