Your configuration file is a file usually called XF86Config. The log should show somewhere near the top which config file it is trying to read and where it is trying to read it from. In my Red Hat 8.0 installation, it is located in /etc/X11/XF86Config. From the command line, you can apply any correctly formatted config file you want with the command (In Red Hat 8.0) "startx -- -xf86config <insert name and location of config file here>. See the man pages for startx, XFree86 and XF86Config where a lot is explained.
