You say you're building a linux from scratch. I suppose you followed instructions from www.linuxfromscratch.org. There are much more things that could be installed and configured on your linux from scratch installation. Did you take a look at "Beyond Linux From Scratch"? There you will also find an install guide for XFree86 in http://beyond.linuxfromscratch.org/view/1.0/x/x.html.
