I was seeing this too, it's the result of the scripts not having execute
permissions. I thought the builds I posted were correct in this regard
though. Can you verify the scripts in the bin directory have execute?

The behaviour of breaking out of an instance of Xindice running in a shell
seems to have changed. It used to be that it Xindice came down cleanly and
that it also stopped the HTTP and gopher services. Now it seems that it
leaves
these running and that explicit kills must be done on these process before
Xindice can be restarted. I have not yet tested if this behaviour also
occurs
when starting/stopping Xindice for init.d scripts; I will when I get
these put
in place for the new release.

I've just posted some test builds for 1.0rc1. I could really use some
help
testing these out. In particular on Windows. I'd like to make these
official on Monday so if there's any chance someone can help with testing
over the weekend I'd really appreciate some feedback. My main concern is
making sure the instructions actually result in a working system and that
the examples work properly.
