I guess it is the embedded version, or at least the XML:DB API part of it anyway. It's simply that while I was refactoring the XML-RPC based XML:DB driver I realized it would only take me an hour or two to add this new version. So I just went ahead since this is one of the commonly asked for features and was something that I really wanted to have too.

I'm sure there are many other enhancements that can be made as we get more people thinking about using Xindice in an embedded fashion. For instance the observer patch that Dave Viner posted is pretty interesting.

I've been hoping to do a little more work on this before announcing it
here, but I'm a little short on time right now so... Last week I added an
embedded XML:DB driver to the Xindice tree. You can use it by changing the
xmldb URI to xmldb:xindice-embed:// instead of xmldb:xindice. It still
needs a lot of work, but does pass the basic tests I have. Obviously, you
need to move to the CVS version of the server to use it. I made a lot of
changes to the tree last week, so if you use it and things are broken
please post about it and understand it might be a day or two before I'll
have time to fix it.
