Very true. I was simply explaining why some administrators would like
the ability to change the banner. This can be useful because most prying
eyes are just kids with a trick they picked up in school. Skillful
hackers can hack a system no matter what an admin does to prevent it,
short of disconnecting all the server cables and placing the server in
the vault at the local bank ... and it's still not completely safe!

try nmap -P0 -sO <host> and you'll get the system type, too. If you
really want to hack a system and have the skills, you don't need an full
featured smtp banner to get you information.
