ok, I must have something configured incorrectly somewhere.

There is a bug in smtpgw.tab processing in 1.24. I released 1.25-pre10
that fixes that, but I forgot to announce it. Duh! :)

You very likely don't want to be using smtpgw.tab though, since it uses
the explicit SMTP routing that not all MTAs seems to support correctly.=20
The smtpfwd.tab should be working correctly though.
