[Xmame] error while compiling xmess from 0.37b13.2

hey folks, my first message is a problem :)

while compiling xmess in my linux
in src/drawgfx line 1147 it gives me
this error message:

"Virtual memorey exhausted"
I'm not a genious, but I guess it's about
something like overcharge of the memory, or maybe not..
but if is it (or not) can anybody give me a solution?

I use a pentium mmx 233 (yeah I know, it's OOOOOOOLD)
128 DIMM RAM kernel 2.2.16-13cl
