Thank you for that explanation. Now I feel better - I have at least some
idea of what's going on.
Now I have again had a moment to sit and play with xmame again. Not that
it's relevant, but I've been painting some walls and ceiling mouldings in my
lobby over the past couple of days - I had been procrastinating and not doing
that for some time as I hate painting. But now it's done, it looks fine and
that chore is out of the way.
I've spent the past little while doing some experimenting. Using jstest, my
joystick is recognized on both /dev/input/js0 and /dev/js0 and all buttons
are recognized and work fine. I didn't make any symbolic links or anything.
This is by simply installing joydev, ns558 and sidewinder modules and nothing
more. Everything else is Red Hat 7.1, right out-of-the-box.
Unfortunately, xmame 0.37b14.1 recognizes my AB buttons only. CXYZ Start and
the two "trigger" buttons are not recognized as button presses at all.
Thinking that it was maybe something to do with the gcc that comes with
RH7.1, I tried running the executable that I compiled using RH7.0 and the gcc
"update" that I did before. I know that executable worked fine with RH7.0
and all of my buttons were recognized. But no joy (stick, that is). Same
deal. AB buttons and nothing more.
Somehow xmame "thinks" that it's seeing all of the buttons; this is what I
get when I crank up ddtod:
----------------------------------------------
Using a Visual with a depth of 16bpp.
MIT-SHM Extension Available. trying to use... Success.
Using Shared Memory Features to speed up
Actual bits per pixel = 16... Ok
I386 joystick interface initialization...
OSD: Info: Joystick 0, 2 axis, 16 buttons
Using 16bpp video mode
Game uses 4098 colors
info: setting fragsize to 1024, numfrags to 2
info: fragsize = 1024, numfrags = 3
info: audiodevice /dev/dsp set to 16bit linear stereo 22050Hz
----------------------------------------------
This seems an awfully similar problem to the one that I had back around b12,
doesn't it.
Sigh....
Does anyone have any suggestions to offer? As I said, the joystick is
recognized by Linux (apparently, as jstest can find it and use it just fine).
