Yesterday I decided to update this computer to Red Hat Linux 7.1. And I am
indeed very pleased with the update. Red Hat Linux just keeps getting
slicker and nicer to use with every revision.
However, now I'm back to a half-working Sidewinder gamepad.
I don't understand how the joystick modules work with this new kernel.
insmod joystick.o
insmod joy-sidewinder.o
This "old way" seems to have been dropped.
I looked back on this mailing list and discovered that I needed to do this:
modprobe joydev
modprobe ns558
modprobe sidewinder
The other two are self-explanatory, but what th'heck is ns558?
Anyway, having installed these modules my Sidewinder gamepad now partially
works. I can move up and down and back and forth and buttons AB work.
However, none of the other buttons are recognized.
I also dug out my Sidewinder Freestyle Pro that I have never yet managed to
get working under Linux, just to see what would happen with these new
modules. Same as before, though - "joystick not found". Oh well.
