Do you have other hardware-3d applications running ?

Out-of-the-box and in-my-experience, hardware 3d does not work with
Mandrake 8.1 I found with my Matrox cards (550 and G400-MAX) I had
to manually install the modules myself (/etc/modules).

A good test for hardware-3d is running the Xscreensaver OpenGL
modules; and of course good-ol' 'gears':
[waratah] gears
Loading required GL library /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2
2823 frames in 5.000 seconds = 564.600 FPS
2891 frames in 5.001 seconds = 578.084 FPS

I have not tried xmame.xgl in the last few months, but I found
even with hardware acceleration, I was happier with the performance
of xmame.x11. The hardware scaling is *very* nice though.
I have a new machine now, so I might build it now and have annother look...

cheers,
-kt
