I had the same problem too, any other app that used esound (e.g. mpg123)
worked fine, but xmame.x11 wouldn't have a bar of it.

It always said something like unable to chmod <something> in /tmp,
and/or unable to connect to port 5400(?)

So it looked as if xmame.x11 couldn't connect to the running esound
daemon, or it was trying to start one up of it's own accord and couldn't
create the thingy (shared memory handle?) in /tmp.

I stuffed around with it to no avail, and gave up to using oss.
I thought it might be a good feature of my MAME cab. to play
both MP3s (from the 'jukebox') as well as games at the same time.
