One thing I've noticed about the VIA onboard sound is it plays one key or two higher than the normal pitch. Maybe it's playing 44khz sound at 48khz? ALSA drivers might fix a few problems, but they bring a few more, such as OSS compatibility stuff, etc. I've had little luck with ALSA, but heard it's improved since I last tried it.
