In such case you could also try a 'nice' to increase the importance of the
xmame program.
Don't forget that in the dreaded win32 the foreground process has a much
higher priority then on a normal *nix machine. Also in case of the 9x
version, you still can bypass the OS to some extended wich boosts
performance also, that's something that isn't allowed under Linux
