I believe the plan is to integrate the MAME 0.59 core into the next MESS 
release (perhaps even the 0.60 core), so they should get much closer to 
being in-sync.  That'll certainly make my job easier.

I think MESS will always be somewhat behind, though, since some of the
more invasive core changes require a lot of drivers to be modified == big 
headaches for the messdevs.
