My current box is a P-III 1.0GHz w/ 256MB of RAM, running KDE under RH8.0.
Video card is an ATI Rage Fury 128 w/ 32 MB.
I'm currently using xmame .62.2
using the command: xmame.dga -fullscreen gunbird2
it takes ~ 1:10 from the time when xmame reports that it's finished loading the ROM files to when the screen shows the warning about video emulation not being 100%

Maybe the system just doesn't have enough RAM to run it! I recommend 128 MB or more personally. I'd have 196, but this one 64 MB module doesn't feel like cooperating with the other 2.
Actually, it does run but it takes *minutes* for a window to appear - you have to be REALLY patient.
This is on a 1.8 GHz P4 with 512 MB of RAM...
yep true .. a bit faster on amd ;-), but it takes time ;-)
runs well with xgl too.
