[Xmame] squished screen with Neo-Geo games

I've had this problem over a couple versions of Xmame, and couldn't find 
any references to it with a googling. With a couple Neo Geo games (last 
blade 2 and Metal Slug 3 are the ones that I can recall offhand), most 
of the game's rendering is squished to the left half of the screen, and 
is green-and-purple colored. I've made sure to update the roms for the 
latest versions, and have tried it with X11, xgl and SDL backends.

Has anyone else had this, and perhaps fixed it? Thanks
