I have no idea how to do either to be honest. :) Could you point me to 
software that already does this, so I can have a look at the code to get 
ideas?

This somehow gives me the idea you've never used my front-end... MAMEd doesn't 
use menus, and all controls were specifically designed to work well with an 
arcade setup. I wrote this front-end to use it in the cabinet I'm still 
planning to build (I may actually start on it soon...finally....after 2 years 
of talking about it... ;).
