Anyway, to pull this right back on topic, i'm glad to report after a quick two hours of install and reconfiguration with Mandrake 10 Community (yeah, i know the official release is imminent, but when your OS is broken, it can't wait!), mamed now does exactly what it should do.
Least it would if i'd compiled up xmame and put it in my bin directory. Will do that now. So, as suspected by both Peiter and myself, nothing wrong with mamed whatsoever.
