There is a large gap between the aims of xmame and sdlmame. XMame
tries to be the best port of the emulator for X systems, while sdlmame
doesn't care about that. SDLMame is designed to be a port for
linux/x86 (and macosx as long as RB wants to) which stays as close to
the windows osd as possible to ensure that keeping up with the
versions is reasonably easy. That's probably why RB refused the
effects patches for instance.

Can a port be good for X systems while staying close to the windows
one? I kinda doubt it. But you guys are welcome to try.

Maybe Hans' way of keeping a delta over the close-tracking sdlmame
version is workable in the long term. That's pretty much what the FX
guys seem to do after all. But managing the delta so that it stays at
a reasonable size will probably prove interesting ;-)

  OG.
