Let me give two cheers for direct EDI-to-XML conversion.  When we were 
doing the Graphic Communications Information Exchange project at GCA, we 
found it helpful to take our existing EDI transactions and map them to XML, 
just to make the psychological leap to XML.  A tool such as XEDI can help 
make that leap.  But David is right; by all means use the opportunity to 
streamline operations.
