In a pure XML environment this is theoretically a non-issue because XML
supports UNICODE which supports 2 byte letters. However, theory and
reality live in two different realms. I think it is probably safe to say
that the standardization efforts will probably remain with English
characters. However, even though some believe architectural forms (lofty
name for standardized mapping) are dead, I belief they can become very
important in the internationalization of EDI/XML standards.

It will also take some time for software to support UNICODE but it will
happen.
