This is because xmms2 handles playlist and actual tracks
differently. There's no reason for a playlist file to appear in the
playlist. What you saw was probably the file sitting in the mlib before
xmms2 tried setup a chain for it.

I remember it being slightly slower at
testing magic chunks and handling radds a few years ago too.
radd(the actual library function that gets called, so this isn't
something with a client) assumes
that you're trying to add a directory of tracks.

I might have misunderstood the problem though. Hope this clarifies
things.
