You're saying a broken installation causes certain features to not work? :) If the xkb map is broken that usually means the server has a bug (-> bugs.fdo.org) or xkeyboard-config is wrongly installed -> install it correctly (from git). with either a released server and even git master there's no reason why the xkbmap should be busted.
