my advice
check the /var/log file for the xserver log and see whether the mode
specified in your XF86Config-4 is being chosen, as there are already
pre-defined modes its possible that it is not using the mode lines that you
have specified rather it is using the X server defined mode lines. what you
can do is call the modeline that you have i.e 1280x1024 as 1280x1024a and
then add that in your screen section as 1280x1024a and then see whether the
x server is loading these modelines or not.

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand you correctly here, but I already
have ranges for HorizSync and VertRefresh.  Do you mean ranges rather
than fixed values in the modeline themself?  If so, how would I go
about creating those? (The modelines I use for 3.3.6 are
recommendations from te Card-Manufacturer and they work fine. Their
support didn't knw what to do about the problems with 4.x though).
