Hi,

For two weeks I have been running an HP Pavillion N5495 laptop
(equipped with Intel 830MG chipset) with the latest CVS XFree86. I would
like to share my experiences and have some questions concerning various
parts of the driver.
Genrally I tried running the laptop with FBDev, VESA and the newest
i810 drivers, and the i810 seems to work best. I has never crashed on me
and looks pretty stable. However I still have a number of issues:
The HP N5495 has a 1400x1050 LCD screen, but server refuses to use
this resolution, I can use either 1600x1200 on an external monitor or
1280x1024 on an LCD (both VESA and FBDev were only able to run at
1024x768 for reasons unclear to me ).
There is a problem with closing the Xserver. When the video mode is in
any way changed (switch to text console, shutting down the server ,
another Xserver is run etc.) it never comes back (It is as if the screen
is blanked), but the Xserver does not crash. Furthermore when running on
the LCD - the console is also blanked. When connected to a CRT monitor
the console is visible. What is strange though is that after the server
shutdown the console on the CRT is obviously in a different video mode
(screen resolution is different). In none of the cases computer hangs -
it is still usable and it is possible to shut it down (even if blindly).
When exectuted a second time - the server executes, reports no errors,
seems to be running, but the screen remains blank (although obviously
there is some mode change). This effectively means that each new X
session requires a laptop reboot.
Intel 830MG is equipped with Twin View capability - XFree86 -scanpci
reports two graphics cards present. However I was never able to run both
cards at the same time, either in mirror mode or as separate displys.
Using the "Switch to the monitor" key gives some unexpected results -
If the CRT is not connected screen blinks every few seconds as if trying
to switch to a CRT. Only cold reboot can stop this behaviour. If a CRT
is connected - the laptop switches constantly between three states: LCD
-> LCD + CRT -> CRT -> LCD -> ... Again only a cold reboot can stop
this.
I was not able to enable DRI - (I am using 2.4.13 custom build kernel
with dri+agp enabled). The server supports the extension, finds the
cards, and then gives an error: [drmOpenFailed].
I was unable to switch on the Render externsion - the i810 driver
reports it as a supported extension, but xdpyinfo does not list it and
other applications fail to use it giving a warnig:
Xlib: extension "RENDER" missing on display ":0.0".
I can provide the xdpyinfo output, the XF86Config file and the XServer
log output if needed.

        Regards,
        Adam Kisiel
