Hi Steve,

First question is, what version of X are you running?

$ X --version

If you are running XFree86 4.X the config file you need to look at is 
/etc/X11/XF86config-4.

If you are running XFree86 3.X the config file you need to look at is 
/etc/X11/XF86config.

If you are running XFree86 4.X you will find a log file 
/var/log/XFree86.0.log.  Look inside this log file.  Near the top you 
will find a line that tells you what configuration file X is using. 
 (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4" or something similar.

Some distributions have both Xfree86 3.X and 4.X installed at the same time.

Check this out first then post the results back here.
