I got it. I horked up the custom modeline in xorg.conf. Here's what I did to
make it work:
1) Shut off DDC in the "Device" section:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel 915GM"
Driver "i810"
Option "NoDDC"
EndSection
2) Add the modeline to the "Monitor" section:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Dell E193FP"
Option "DPMS"
# 1280x1024 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 63.60 kHz; pclk: 108.88 MHz
Modeline "1280x1024_60.00" 108.88 1280 1360 1496 1712 1024 1025 1028
1060 -HSync +Vsync
EndSection
3) Set the mode in the "Display" section:
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024_60.00"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
If anybody else is having this problem, don't just paste my modeline into your
xorg.conf. This only works for my particular monitor and video card combo.
Use /usr/X11R6/bin/gtf to generate your own.
Hopefully those with DVI monitors won't have to bother with this mess.
